The main substances classified as CMRs present in fragrances are as follows:
- Phthalates, which are often used to improve the durability and longevity of a fragrance on the skin
- Chlorinated compounds, such as aromatic chlorinated compounds (ACs) and chlorinated phenols (CPs)
- Organic solvents, such as benzyl alcohol, which can be used as carriers for fragrances and cosmetic products
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
We often speak specifically about phthalates, which are actually a sub-category of CMRs. They are widely used chemicals. Phthalates can therefore also be dangerous to human health by disrupting the endocrine (hormonal) system and causing negative effects on reproduction and development. Studies have also shown that phthalates can be linked to health issues such as obesity, diabetes, reproductive disorders, and developmental problems in children.
Some tips for avoiding products containing these harmful substances:
- Read labels and understand the ingredients (not always obvious 🤯)
- Opt for natural products, which are less likely to contain CMRs and phthalates
- Look for certifications such as "eco-friendly products" or "phthalate-free products"
