Summer Zest: when fragrance sets the rules

Every summer, the same ritual. Evenings on the terrace cut short, nights with windows closed, coils smoking in the gardens. Mosquitoes are a universal nuisance—and for centuries, one plant has stood up to them: lemongrass.

A plant, a well-deserved reputation

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus or Cymbopogon winterianus) is a tall grass native to tropical Asia, now grown all over the world for its aromatic properties. Its secret lies in its natural compounds—citronellal, geraniol, citronellol—which give it that recognizable fresh, green, and slightly lemony scent.

These same molecules have been recognized for decades for their effect on insects. Lemongrass does not kill them: it disrupts their olfactory system. Mosquitoes navigate by smell—they locate their targets thanks to the CO₂, heat, and organic acids that we naturally emit. Lemongrass creates a sort of olfactory fog that scrambles these signals and disorients them.

The intelligence of scent

What is fascinating about lemongrass is that it acts exclusively through scent. No chemicals, no contact action—just a fragrance that reconfigures the environment. It is a form of plant intelligence: throughout its evolution, the plant has equipped itself with a defense mechanism based on olfaction, the most archaic and powerful sense there is.

That is also why continuous diffusion is more effective than intermittent application. A constant olfactory presence in the space—a scented terrace, an interior where lemongrass is diffused continuously—maintains this scrambling effect much better than a skin application that evaporates in a few hours. Working with fragrance rather than against insects: a gentle, natural, and infinitely more pleasant approach.

Lemongrass at Emelle: the Summer Zest candle

We wanted to capture all of this in a candle. Summer Zest is formulated with a lemongrass fragrance crafted in Grasse—the same source as for our entire range—and poured into our European organic soy wax. It smells authentic: fresh, green, slightly lemony, without that artificial note sometimes found in commercial mosquito-repellent products.

It burns slowly and diffuses the fragrance steadily and continuously—exactly what is needed for the lemongrass to be effective in a space. A way to bring summer inside, to scent the terrace before the sun goes down, and to fully enjoy what lemongrass has to offer.
